White Flakes in Saltwater Pools: What We've Learned (and What We Haven't)

If you've got a saltwater pool and you're seeing white flakes floating in the water or settling on the bottom — here's the honest truth: they come from salt cells, they're one of the most stubborn problems in the pool world, and nobody, us included, has a guaranteed fix that works on every pool. We've serviced pools in St. George for six-plus years, and we're going to be straight with you about what we've seen.

What we know

White flakes show up on saltwater pools with salt cells. Beyond that, there are a lot of theories about why — and we've read and chased all of them:

• LSI / water balance — the balance of calcium hardness, pH, alkalinity, water temperature, and cyanuric acid (CYA).
• Metals in the water.
• Phosphates.

What we've tried

All of it. We've adjusted the LSI factors — kept hardness, pH, alkalinity, and CYA on the low end for long stretches. We've run metal removers and sequestrants. We've used phosphate removers. We've run pumps around the clock.

What actually happens

Sometimes we get fewer flakes. On certain pools we've even cleared them up for a while with the right products. But more often than not, they come back. Nothing we've found is a 100% fix across every pool.

One thing we've learned in Southern Utah: white flakes tend to show up in spring as salt cells come back online, and often ease off in fall once we swap to dummy cells for the winter. It's part of why our care changes with the seasons.
