White flakes in your pool? Here's what they are.

If you've noticed little white flakes drifting around your pool, or a rough, crusty film building up on your salt cell, you're not alone. In St. George it's one of the most common things we get asked about. The good news: it's almost never a health problem. It's calcium.

What the flakes actually are

Those flakes are calcium scale, the same mineral that builds up in a tea kettle or on a shower head. Two things make our pools especially prone to it:

• Hard fill water. St. George tap water is high in calcium to begin with. Every time your pool evaporates in the heat and you top it off, the water leaves the calcium behind and the level creeps up.
• Salt systems. A salt cell makes chlorine by running current through the water, and right at the cell that process pushes the pH up and encourages calcium to drop out of solution and crust onto the cell and flake into the water.

So between hard water concentrating over the summer and a salt cell nudging it along, flakes and scale are a very normal St. George problem, not a sign something is broken.

Are the flakes harmful?

No. Calcium flakes are cosmetic and they won't hurt you to swim in. They're annoying to look at, they can make water feel a little "off," and left alone the scale will shorten the life of a salt cell, but they're not a health hazard. So there's no need to panic, just a reason to get the water balanced and the cell cleaned up.

Why you can't just "shock it away"

Calcium scale isn't algae or a chlorine issue, so more chlorine won't touch it. It's a water-balance problem. Fixing it means bringing the whole chemistry back into line and cleaning the mineral off the equipment, not dumping in one more chemical.

How we handle it

There's no single magic dose that makes it vanish forever, anyone who promises that isn't being straight with you. What actually works is a methodical approach:

• Clean the source. We inspect and acid-clean the salt cell so it stops shedding scale, and clear buildup off surfaces and equipment.
• Rebalance the water. We get your calcium hardness, pH, and alkalinity back into a range that keeps calcium dissolved instead of falling out, and hold it there.
• Add a sequestrant when needed. A sequestrant helps keep minerals in solution so they stop flaking, especially useful on pools that scale over and over.
• Manage the fill water. Since the hard fill water is the root cause, we look at how the pool is topped off and, on repeat offenders, talk through longer-term options.

On stubborn pools this is an ongoing balance, not a one-time fix, and we'll always tell you honestly where yours stands.

What to realistically expect

On a lot of pools, cleaning the cell and getting the balance right knocks the flakes way back and keeps them there with normal weekly service. On pools with very hard water, or ones that top off constantly through the summer, calcium will keep wanting to come back, and the honest answer is that it becomes something we stay on top of rather than fix once and forget. A sequestrant helps, and in the worst cases the real long-term fix is managing the fill water itself. We'd rather tell you that plainly up front than have you surprised when the flakes return.
